From the Desk of Our President: Now More Than Ever is a Strong Time to be in the Trades

As we reflect on the past year, one theme stands out clearly: the skilled trades remain essential to the strength and resilience of our economy. While the last few years have tested nearly every sector, the fundamentals that support long-term demand for skilled labor have not changed — and in many cases, they have strengthened.

Across the maritime sector, we are seeing tangible signs of renewed momentum. Several shipyard locations are beginning to ramp up activity, with backlog visibility improving and long-term programs continuing to move forward. These developments reinforce what many in the industry already know: shipbuilding and repair remain critical to national infrastructure, defense readiness, and global commerce.

This optimism was reinforced last week at WorkBoat in New Orleans, where I had the opportunity to speak directly with shipyard leaders, operators, and industry partners. Those conversations reflected a consistent message: while challenges remain, confidence in upcoming work and long-term programs is growing. Hearing firsthand how organizations are preparing for increased demand only strengthened my belief that the maritime trades are entering a more constructive phase.

At the same time, it’s important to acknowledge that manufacturing, more broadly, has experienced a slower period. Market uncertainty, supply chain adjustments, and cautious capital investment have all contributed to softer demand in certain segments. However, these cycles are not new — and neither is the recovery that typically follows them.

Looking ahead, we remain constructively optimistic about manufacturing as we approach 2026. Indicators such as infrastructure investment, reshoring initiatives, and long-term industrial demand suggest that skilled trades will continue to play a central role in the next phase of growth. When production rebounds, it does so with urgency — and organizations that have maintained access to skilled labor will be best positioned to respond.

What stands out most to me is this: the trades are not a short-term trend. They are a cornerstone of economic stability. Welders, electricians, fitters, machinists, and countless other craftspeople are the ones who turn plans into progress — who build, maintain, and modernize the systems we all rely on.

Now more than ever, this is a strong time to be in the trades. Not because conditions are perfect, but because the long-term outlook remains sound. Demand may fluctuate, but the need for skilled craftsmanship endures.

As we move forward, our focus remains on supporting this workforce and the industries that depend on it — with clarity, honesty, and a long-term perspective. The work ahead matters, and the people who do it matter just as much.
