Resume Building Tips #1
If you’re a skilled trades worker ready to take on a new contract or simply want to explore the available opportunities in the market, keep in mind that your resume will be your best, and possibly only, first impression with hiring managers. Your resume is much more than just a brief timeline of your previous jobs; it should showcase your career progression and the results of your hard work. Before we dive into three simple yet effective ways to enhance your resume and increase your chances of landing a job offer, let’s consider a key statistic: Industry research shows that, on average, hiring managers spend less than 8 seconds reviewing a resume before deciding whether to move forward or pass. So, how can we effectively highlight your strengths and field experience? Let’s break it down.
- Be Clear About Dates
Always list the full dates you worked at each job, including both the month and the year. Why is this important? Hiring managers pay close attention to dates to understand how long you worked and whether your experience aligns with the role. Without listing the month, your work experience could be anywhere from two months to two years. If dates are missing, they may assume you worked for a short time or left under unfavorable circumstances – even if that’s not the case. Also, if you have any employment gaps due to continued education, medical reasons, or other factors, make sure to note them clearly to avoid any misunderstandings. Lastly, make sure to keep your resume up to date with your most recent work experience.
Example:
- Don’t say 2021–2022
- Instead say March 2021 – October 2022
- Say What You Built
Don’t just list job titles – go beyond the basics and describe the actual work you did. Employers want to see the depth of your experience and the contributions you made; Use bullet points to highlight the key responsibilities, achievements, and projects that demonstrate your expertise. Include details such as:
- What kind of product you worked on (ships, aircraft, machines, buildings)
- What materials you used (aluminum, steel, copper)
- What tools or machinery you operated (CNC, forklifts, grinders)
- What processes you applied (MIG, TIG, Stick welding)
- How many people you managed and to what capacity
Examples:
- Welded aluminum pipe using TIG process for U.S. Navy shipbuilding
- Operated overhead crane to move steel beams for assembly
This helps hiring managers quickly determine if your skills match their needs. Remember we only have 7 seconds to impress so let’s avoid using unnecessary fluff.
- Show Your Growth
If you advanced within a company or were entrusted with additional responsibilities, it’s important to showcase this progression on your resume. Be sure to list any promotions (such as moving from a Welder to Lead Welder) as this demonstrates your growth and increased skill level. Additionally, mention any leadership roles or mentorship experiences, such as training new hires, leading a team, or taking on additional duties that were beyond your main scope of work.
This demonstrates that you’re reliable and that your previous employers valued your contributions. Employers love to hire individuals who show consistent growth and leadership potential.
Example:
• Supervised a team of 15 electricians, trained new hires, managed timekeeping, and helped develop their skill sets while reporting to the foreman.
Keep your resume simple, clear, and focused on your work, don’t worry about making it overly flashy or with fancy designs and fonts. A straightforward resume with the right information will always stand out more than one that lacks crucial details. Remember, we have just 6-7 seconds to make a lasting impression, so let’s make it count with purpose and clarity.
