Safety Spotlight: Working in Cold Conditions

Working in cold environments is a reality for many Ameri-Force employees across shipyards, manufacturing facilities, and industrial job sites. While colder temperatures may feel manageable at first, prolonged exposure can create serious safety risks if proper precautions aren’t taken.

Cold weather doesn’t just affect comfort — it affects balance, reaction time, and the body’s ability to maintain a safe core temperature. Understanding these risks and preparing for them is key to staying safe on the job.

Understanding Cold Stress

Cold stress occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. As temperatures drop — especially when combined with wind, rain, or snow — the risk of injury increases.

Workers are more vulnerable to cold stress when:

  • Working outdoors or in unheated areas
  • Exposed to wind, moisture, or cold metal surfaces
  • Wearing inadequate or wet clothing
  • Fatigue or dehydrated

If left unaddressed, cold stress can lead to serious medical conditions.

Common Cold-Related Hazards

Cold environments introduce both physical and environmental hazards, including:

  • Slips, trips, and falls caused by ice, snow, or wet surfaces
  • Reduced dexterity and grip, increasing the chance of tool-related injuries
  • Frostbite, which most often affects fingers, toes, ears, and the nose
  • Hypothermia, a dangerous drop in core body temperature
  • Frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissue freeze due to extreme cold.
  • Hypothermia occurs when the body’s core temperature drops below safe levels and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Best Practices for Working Safely in Cold Conditions

Taking proactive steps can significantly reduce the risks associated with cold weather work.

Dress for the conditions

  • Wear weather-appropriate PPE
  • Dress in layers that can be added or removed as conditions change
  • Keep hands, head, and neck covered
  • Wear insulated, slip-resistant footwear designed for cold environments

Protect against slips and falls

  • Walk carefully on icy or wet surfaces
  • Use handrails where available
  • Report icy walkways or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Keep paths clear of ice and snow whenever possible

Manage exposure

  • Take short, frequent breaks in warm areas
  • Avoid working in cold conditions when overly fatigued
  • Change out of wet clothing promptly
  • Keep an extra set of dry clothes available

Fuel your body

  • Stay hydrated
  • Consume warm, high-calorie meals and drinks to help maintain body heat

Know the Warning Signs

Early recognition of cold stress symptoms is critical. Alert your supervisor immediately if you or a coworker experience:

  • Numbness or tingling in extremities
  • Shivering that doesn’t stop
  • Slurred speech or confusion
  • Loss of coordination
  • Extreme fatigue

Prompt reporting allows issues to be addressed before they become serious.
